The Bryan-College Station Mayors' Committee on People with Disabilities and Junction Five-0-Five are accepting nominations for the "Mayors' Award."
This award is an opportunity to acknowledge and recognize outstanding contributions by an individual to eliminate attitudinal, social and physical barriers for people with disabilities within our community.
You don't have to be a person with a disability to apply.
Self-nominations are encouraged.
The deadline for receipt of nominations is September 26, 2008.
The award will be presented at the Briarcrest Country Club on October 16th, 7 p.m. during
the Junction Five-0-Five Harvest Moon Celebration and Fundraiser.
The cities of College Station and Bryan are each donating a $50 gift certificate from one of their local merchants. In addition to the two gift certificates, the cities are sponsoring the recipient and a guest to attend the event on 10/16 at the Briarcrest Country Club.

The Bryan-College Station Mayors Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities is made up of members appointed by the mayors of both Bryan and College Station, Texas. Emphasis is placed on including people with disabilities, employers and businesses, organizations for people with disabilities, service providers and interested others.
The Mission of The Mayors Committee is to further opportunities for people with disabilities to enjoy full and equal access to employment and a life of independence, productivity, and self-determination.
The Mayors Committee is dedicated to addressing all issues affecting people with disabilities. Some of these issues are:
- Employment
- Transportation
- Accessibility
- Housing
- Awareness and Education regarding
The Americans with Disabilities Act (the ADA)
The Mayors Committee
invites community involvement and has subcommittees on which an interested individual can serve. Those committees are:

The Purpose of Our Local Mayors Committee |
- To hold competitive employment as a goal for persons with disabilities regardless of the type of their disability.
- To uphold the rights of individuals with disabilities to mainstream participation in all facets of life.
- To commit to work with individuals with disabilities as equal partners in promoting the creation of a totally accessible society.
- To honor and promote the rights of individuals with disabilities to be involved in shaping policies and programs which affect them.
- To use people-first language and promote a realistic portrayal of individuals with disabilities.
- To break down architectural and communication barriers inhibiting or preventing participation by individuals with disabilities.
- To encourage equal opportunity in employment and any other facet of life through the provision of reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities.
- To provide individuals with disabilities, employers, advocates, service providers, and others with information which will enable and encourage them to participate in public debate (public information) on issues affecting employment opportunities for persons with disabilities.
- To develop better understanding by persons with disabilities of: rehabilitation, training, and placement services available to them, and encourage persons with disabilities to utilize these services.
- Act as a clearing house (source of information) for information related to persons with disabilities.
- To carry out other related duties as may be assigned by the mayors.
